New IATA Guidance Aims to Improve Pet Air Travel
On 15 July 2026, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) released new guidance designed to help airlines deliver a safer, more consistent experience for passengers travelling with their pets by air. The recommendations focus on every stage of the journey, from booking and check-in through to boarding, the flight itself and arrival, with animal welfare remaining a key priority.
The new guidance follows research showing that many pet owners are uncertain about airline policies and the travel process. IATA found that 41% of people were unsure whether their pet was eligible to travel, while others were unclear about airline requirements and what to expect during the journey. The aim is to encourage clearer communication and greater consistency across the industry.
Although the guidance focuses on pets travelling in the aircraft cabin where permitted, it reinforces a wider message that good preparation is essential for every pet journey. Choosing the correct travel container, understanding airline requirements and ensuring all documentation is completed correctly can help reduce stress for both pets and their owners.
